My computer’s back up and running! PRAISE THE LORD!!! The fan and motherboard has been changed and amusingly the guy told my mum that using the computer 3 hours straight is considered minimal and that the computer burns very little electricity compared to the air-conditioner.

SO WHATCHA GONNA DO MAMA?

Rant #3 [MOM]

We hear it all the time. ‘Work Longer. Retire Later.’ Speeches from our country’s ministers. Well for those who do not know, the current minimum retiring age is 62 and my mum will hit that age in July. Because she asked, because she pleaded, she managed to get an extension and will therefore retire when I graduate from Ngee Ann. Still my heart aches when she tells me what has happened. But I don’t think it’s safe to type out what she told me. Her employer? The Ministry Of Defence. Which is linked to the Ministry Of Manpower.

Quoting Richard Thong Kok Mun who quoted Minster Mentor Lee Kuan Yew: ‘Perhaps some day what Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew said will come true: “I do not believe we should have a retirement age… should go on working for as long as we can…” ‘

I read his article which you can find here. One of the comments caught me off guard. With a username like ‘oldmaster’ you’d expect some sort of smart ass answer to the article. Yet it shocked me, very much like all truths which come smack in your face free-of-charge do.

MM talks about working after retirement in order to carry on a meaningful life.

The average Singaporean talks about working after retirement in order to make ends meet.

What a gap in perception. How to close it, liao?

Wow. Wow because it’s true. People are worried about what to do after retirement. Will they / Become redundant? Sit in the house all day trying to catch up with the world? Desperately hope for the young life that they had? It is just plain depressing to have that kind of life. So I guess MM Lee isn’t wrong by encouraging a meaningful life. Right now I’m in my prime and I think alot of us take it for granted.

But honestly, for us being the unperfect people that we are, we can’t help but sometimes wonder “What is the Ministry Of Manpower doing nowadays?”

But I’m just a ‘kid’ so maybe I shouldn’t say much. Bleah
